South Coast Tennis Day

On 12 June 2009, Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal will be hosting a South Coast Tennis Day, somewhat different to the norm.

This year it is to be a fancy dress, so all participants are politely requested to dress for the occasion. It begins at 10am, and with an evening Spitbraai scheduled to take place afterward, the festivities are expected to go on well into the night.

The days play is to be concluded with a tennis standoff between the Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Westville office, and the South Coast regional office. The venue for the showdown is Hiberdene Tennis Club.

To members of the Association entry is free and all participants are to receive a prize. Regrettably numbers are limited to 40 entrants and places will thus be allocated on a first come first serve bases.

For more information, contact the Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal South Coast Office, on 039 3174078

Taming The PC

When it comes to computers, if you don’t know a function exists, you can’t use it. Useful functions are:

1) Replace

When you need to replace a word which re-occurs many times in a document, for example, a name which is spelled incorrectly, click on Edit/Replace and fill in the word as it presently appears in the document, as well as the name as you want it to appear. Click on “replace all” and note the time you have saved by not having to re-type the name wherever it appears in the document.

2) Format

When you are sent a document which has been formatted by someone else, and you wish to add paragraphs, change the numbering etc, you often find that the embedded formats make the change process difficult.

It is easier to click on Edit/Select all, and then Copy, then open a new word document, then click on Edit/Paste Special/ click on Unformatted Text. Then save this new doc under your chosen name.

3) Buttons

Missing a button? Click on View/Toolbars/Customize/Commands, then in left hand box All Commands. Now in the right hand box click and drag the buttons you need up to the toolbar area at the top of the screen to ensure that the button you need appears there.

Annual General Meeting and Launch 2009

Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal held its annual general meeting on 21 May 2009 at the Master Builders Centre in Westville, Durban. The function was well attended by members as well as key stakeholders and also featured the launch of the Association’s new corporate identity, website and expanded member service offering.

The new corporate identity features a simple, yet effective logo, which has been carefully designed to allow the Association to vigorously build the Master Builders brand. The stronger the brand, the more leverage the Association has in promoting and protecting its members’ interests.

One of the unique ways in which the Association can now promote members is through the Find-a-Builder module on the new website. This allows members and the public to select a member of the Master Builders Association, using a variety of simple and advanced search criteria.

The roll out of the new branding is coupled with the launch of a comprehensive awareness campaign, that is aimed at improving the image of the building and construction industry, by promoting excellence in construction.

Narrow Down Your Search

As the above clip tells us, those incredibly innovative geniuses at Google, have come up with some amazing applications that define web searches, and therefore like WikiAnswers, does alleviate online time wasting.

Sometimes the shear volume of content on a specific website can be overwhelming. If your work, studies, or personal interests necessitates on-line research, take note of the above pointers, it will definitely make life easier

Big sites are generally niche authoritive, and become known as the go to sites, pertaining to the industries they represent. Those who update them, are experts in their respective fields, and the organizations these sites represent, are exceedingly reputable and value their hard earned reputations. One such site goes live on Friday. Watch This Space !!!!

Turn off the Switch

Or so we might have to do to save costs if Eskom succeeds in obtaining approval from the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) for its proposed 34% price hike in electricity tariffs.

The application has been officially made to NERSA which in turn has published notices in the press calling for all stakeholders and the public to comment by 2nd June 2009.

Eskom is asking for an unusually large hike in order to obtain funding for its capital expansion projects. These projects are designed to ensure an adequate supply of electricity for the future.

Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal is a member of Business Unity SA (BUSA) through Master Builders South Africa (MBSA), and thus has a voice through BUSA to Eskom. MBSA has also been officially informed of Eskom’s application, and comments have been invited. (Eskom’s Briefing note will be uploaded to our new Website, Friday 22 May 2009)

SA appears to be in a Catch-22 situation. We can’t afford a massive tariff increase just as we enter an economic recession but if Eskom doesn’t build more capacity, we will not be able to expand our economy and create jobs going forward. The international capital markets won’t lend us money, so it’s now up to John Citizen to rescue the situation. And he is getting poorer by the month.

Comments can be submitted via ourselves to MBSA and to BUSA which will use them in its representations, or directly to Eskominterimprice2009@nersa.org.za

Meet The Team

Those of us who are involved in the development of the new Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal website, due to go live on May the 22nd, have been burning the midnight oil to ensure that we meet that deadline.

The Development phase is for all intents and purposes, done and dusted, and we are now working on the uploading of copy. Besides the many unique facets specific to the Building and Construction industry, the site will also have some fairly standard website content, such as a “Meet the Team” menu.

In preparing that particular aspect of it, I discovered that some of my colleagues have been involved in some fascinating and diverse ventures, many of which are exceedingly commendable.

When we go live next week, be sure to visit the "ABOUT US" page, and find out more, about the people you interact with.

The Answers to Your Questions

There is an excellent resource for intelligent answers to just about any question you could possibly wish to ask, it’s called WikiAnswers.com.

Conceptualized by Wikipedia, WikiAnswers.com is a Q & A (Question & Answer) project, driven by contributors from all walks of life. Anybody with online access can ask, answer, and edit a question, thus contributing to a global Q & A Database that covers all topics.

As the above clip informs us, they do have a system in place whereby content uploaded is carefully screened. Precautions are taken to ensure that digital thugs, along with comedian wannabe’s, are kept well at bay.

Bearing in mind that the response you get is specific to your question, rather than sifting through loads of data, on the various sites your preferred search engine recommends, try WikiAnswers first, it could save you loads of time and prevent unnecessary frustration.

In saying that, one cannot discard the value of a niche authorative website that is frequently updated by experts in their respective fields. Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal will be launching their new website on the 22nd of May 2009…….WATCH THIS SPACE !!!!!

Tips on getting the most from the OHS Online Forum

For those who may be unaware, an Internet forum is an online discussion site which generally centers around a singular subject. Those who share a common interest engage with each other, communities are formed, and information is openly shared.

For the Newbie, here are some pointers to engaging on the forum:

Spend some time on the forum first - read a few posts and get a feel for the forum and it's members. When you are ready, take the big step and introduce yourself in this section. It doesn't have to be a 10 page essay - just a paragraph or two will do.

Alternatively, you can dive right in and simply reply to a post that you find interesting or can add something to. Remember this is not the English Language Forum - people are more interested in what you have to say, than in how you say it, so don't worry about the inevitable typo's that creep in. If you are a perfectionist, or a literary genius, you can however always go back into your post and edit it at any time.

Although you can just 'lurk' on the forum, bear in mind that a forum is a community of like-minded people and you will get the most out of it by actively participating in discussions and engaging with members.

Remember, unlike a face-to-face discussion, forum members cannot see the emotion on the poster's face. This unfortunately results in many posts being taken out of context, so the clever forum guys invented Smilies. Use these in your post or the title to convey your feelings - if you are new to Smilies, simply put your mouse over a face and you will see a description of the relevant Smiley Face.

Most importantly, there are no stupid questions!!

As with any community, be it online or offline, we have some rules and guidelines. (Link for Rules and Guidelines = http://forum.masterbuilders.co.za/showthread.php?t=1)

To go onto our Forum and Introduce Yourself, go to http://forum.masterbuilders.co.za/forumdisplay.php?f=57 , we look forward to having you onboard.

New Electrical Installation Regulations

The following snippets form the opening paragraphs of an excellent piece authored by Chris Greager, National Director of Operations, Electrical Contractors’ Association South Africa. Chris’s article is a comprehensive overview of the new Electrical Installation Regulations, compiled by an industry expert.

“The long awaited new Electrical Installation Regulations (not to be confused with the Wiring Code SANS 10142-1) were published in the Government Gazette on 6 March 2009. The Regulations become effective on 1 May 2009, but regulation 5(6) will only becomes effective on 1 April 2010.

The draft Regulations have appeared in various forms and have been under discussion since 2001, and much acrimonious debate has taken place. However, with one or two exceptions which I will mention below, they are a great improvement on the current Regulations that were published in October 1992, and bring a lot more clarity and control.”

Will you please send someone to mend the garden path. My wife tripped and fell on it yesterday and now she’s pregnant.

50% of the walls are damp. 50% have crumbling plaster and 50% are plain filthy.

I am still having problems with smoke in my new drawers.

Taylor's Rule

The following article referring to Taylor’s Rule, was authored by FNB Chief Economist, Cees Bruggemans:

"Taylor's Rule*

Estimating where interest rates should be.

According to Taylor's Rule, the Prime Interest Rates should currently be :

"Neutral" Real Prime Rate 5.5%
(Average September 1989 - July 1995, 1999 - 2007)

Expected CPI inflation: 4Q 2010 5.0%

0.5 x (Current CPI - CPI "target") 2.0%
= 0.5 x (8.5% - 4.5%)

0.5 x (output "Gap") - 2.0%

Target Prime Interest Rate: 10.5%
Current Prime Interest Rate: 4 May 2009 12.0%

Comment: With the prime interest rate still lingering at 12%, the SARB is currently only 1.5% behind what a rough Taylor estimate suggests should be the interest rate level TODAY.

Financial markets today are discounting even lower rates later on this year, which isn’t unrealistic according to Taylor if the actual CPI inflation rate drops below 6% and the other 2010 assumptions about inflation and the output gap continue to apply.

But it will be up to the SARB to make the final call on the risks facing us, especially external financial ones and cost push domestic want."

Construction, As Seen From Above

The above slideshow was compiled using aerial photographs taken by Steve McCurrach, covering a variety of developments, in and around the greater Durban area. They incorporate several places of interest, such as the new Airport Development in La Mercy, as well as the widening and deepening of the Durban harbour entrance.

Steve is owner operator of a company called Airserv which carries the strapline: Affordable Aerial Photography, Environmental, Agriculture, Real Estate.

The aircraft used is a top wing Rainbow Cheetah, which Steve informs us that although essentially classified as a microlight, it is equipped with a rated aviation engine, and has the avionics equivalent to that of any light aircraft.

The Cheetah’s ability to make its way to sites quickly, slow loitering speed, and removable doors, make it ideal for aerial photography, its low operating costs, enables Steve to keep it affordable. For more information visit www.airserv.co.za

  • Congratulate the Association on the launch of the new brand and expanded service offering.
  • Promote your company, product or service
  • Associate yourself with the Master Builders Association
The insert will feature editorial and copy on the Master Builders Association, as well as on the Building and Construction industry in general. We anticipate an overrun of 1000 units, which will be kept at the Association’s four offices for distribution to members and visitors.

The Mercury prints and distributes 42,000 copies of the Newspaper.

Numbers are limited and bookings are made on a first come, first serve basis. As we anticipate this offering to be over-subscribed, we will retain the details of all interested parties, as we intend publishing another feature after the Excellence in Construction Awards later this year.

Should you be interested in this opportunity, or would like to be notified of other opportunities to promote your product/service to our members and the public, please contact Tanya our advertising co-ordinator, before 12 May 2009, on 031 266 7070 or email tanya@masterbuild.co.za

South Coast Region Golf Day

The first annual South Coast Master Builders Golf day was played at the Port Shepstone Country Club on 24 April 2009. Perfect weather and excellent course conditions contributed towards a fun filled day that saw 92 players take to the fairways. Much to the delight of players and organizers, the event was a resounding success.

The Competition format was played on a Four Ball alliance scramble drive, two scores two count, with the three winning teams having consisted of:
  • First: John Beekman; Neels Nortje; Hans Stols and Hans Stols jnr.
  • Second: Phil Myburgh; H. Hodgson; Gordon Dickson and R Matko
  • Third: Benny Pillay; George Raman; Yzette Greyling and Debi Stuward
The Master Builders Association team actually winning, was totally unexpected and was in no way part of the planning. Nonetheless, the gauntlet has been tossed and we now challenge our members, to bring us down a notch next year.

The prize giving was presented by Ian Steward who did an excellent job in the absence of Ray Basson, Ray was unable to attend due to the illness of his wife. All teams, regardless of placing received prizes worth a combined value of R30 000.00. A sliding door donated by Builders Trade Depot was also auctioned off and a total amount of R3400.00 was raised for charity. The cheque will be handed out at our AGM on 14 May 2009.

I would like to give credit and thanks to all our sponsors who put in a tremendous amount of hard work supplying refreshments at most of the holes. Their contribution helped create an excellent atmosphere and added color to the day. The catering was done by Sally from Port Shepstone Country Club and the spitbraai supplied by Michael Fray’s; was magnificent and most delightful after a long day of golf. The support we received was absolutely superb and we look forward to growing the competition into an annual event not to be missed.
