Militarising of Police Ranks

The Order of Precedence of Ranks In The South African Police Service

The Minister of Police has in terms of the South African Police Service Act amended the Regulations to provide for a number of new ranks in the Service with effect from 1 April 2010.

The ranks in order of precedence are as follows:

General (appointed as National Commissioner)
Lieutenant- General (appointed as Deputy National Commissioner)
Lieutenant-General (appointed as Divisional Commissioner)
Lieutenant-General (appointed as Provincial Commissioner)
Major- General
Brigadier
Colonel
Lieutenant-Colonel
Major
Captain
Lieutenant
Warrant Officer
Sergeant
Constable

General
Bheki Cele believes that the militarising of police ranks will have a positive impact.

"There're no more inspectors. You can find inspectors at school and you'll find inspectors of water and all that, but not on the police force... and you will find senior superintendents in hospitals."

He is quoted as saying that changing ranks would bear fruit for officers that had been in the same position for years without promotion.

"It will push them up... promotions will take place."
