A contractor and a lawyer, goes to Heaven

Contractor humour  ....

A contractor and a lawyer are in car accident and show up at the Pearly Gates together.

St. Peter greets them. "Come with me, my sons," he says. "I will take you to the homes where you will spend all of eternity."

The contractor and the lawyer get into St. Peter's holy convertible, and they all head on down a beautiful golden road, which turns into a platinum road, which turns onto an even grander road paved with sparkling diamonds.

They pull up in front of a huge luxury mansion, where St. Peter turns to the lawyer and says, "Here is your home for the rest of eternity, my son, enjoy! And if there is anything you need, just let me know."

The contractor is pretty excited as St. Peter goes back down the diamond studded boulevard, down the platinum highway, and onto the street of gold. Then they turn down an avenue of silver, drive along a stone alley and over an unpaved footpath to pull up in front of a rickety aluminum-siding cabin with a little picket fence.

St Peter says, "Here you go!" and starts to leave.

"Hey now, wait just a minute here!" says the shocked contractor. "I've been a good man all my life! I always did my business honestly, treated others fairly, cherished my family, and was a good steward of the Earth! How come the lawyer gets the big mansion and I get this shack?"

St. Peter says: "Well, contractors are a dime a dozen here, but we've never had a lawyer before."

Workplace Skills Plans - Reminder

Those of you who follow our news updates on masterbuilders.co.za, will possibly recall some editorial penned by Victor Smith, relating to the submission of Workplace Skills Plans (WSP).

Victor made it known that as in 2011, the Association would again in 2012 be assisting Members with the process.

In essence, if you are paying 1% of you wage bill to SARS, you qualify for 40% of your contributions as a mandatory grant to use for training, you can thereafter apply for further funds through a discretionary grant. In order to access these funds, you have to submit a workplace skills plan.

It was communicated that we would perform the service free of charge, we do however require the information by no later 30 June 2012.

Please note that if you are interested, you need to get that information through to us as soon as possible, the cut-off date is fast approaching.

Real World Construction Terminology

I came across this humorous take on construction terminology on an American website dedicated to contractors.  I have to admit, I did find it quite amusing, I’m sure you will too. Enjoy ....

Contractor - A gambler who never gets to shuffle, cut or deal.

Bid Opening - A poker game in which the losing hand wins.

Bid - A wild guess carried out to two decimal places.

Low Bidder - A contractor who is wondering what he left out.

Engineer''s Estimate - The cost of construction in heaven.

Project Manager - The conductor of an orchestra in which every musician is in a different union.

Critical Path Method - A management technique for losing your shirt under perfect control.

OSHA - A protective coating made by half-baking a mixture of fine print, red tape, split hairs and baloney--usually applied at random with a shotgun.

Strike - An effort to increase egg production by strangling the chicken.

Delayed Payment - A tourniquet applied at the pockets.

Completion Date - The point at which liquidated damages begin.

Liquidated Damages - A penalty for failing to achieve the impossible.

Auditor - Person who goes in after the war is lost and bayonets the wounded.

Lawyer - Person who goes in after the auditors to strip the bodies.

Centurion Symbio City

It looks as though in the foreseeable future, the suburb of Centurion near the City of Pretoria in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, will boast one of the World’s tallest buildings.

In his article titled ‘Reality or "Pie in the Sky? "’ Pieter Rautenbach informs us that this colossal skyscraper is to be 484 meters high, which will no doubt give Centurion its very own unique skyline.

The 110 storey building is to be known as Centurion Symbio City and should be completed in 2018. It is to be among the 6 tallest buildings in the world and the highest on the African continent. The current tallest building in Africa is the Carlton Centre with the new structure destined to surpass it by a staggering 224 meters.  Read Pieter’s Article

The thought did occur to me that if they were to paint it Blue Bull pink, they would also be able to boast the only man made structure in Africa, visible from space.

2012 Durban Golf Day

When determining a venue for our 2012 Durban Golf Day, ticking all the boxes proved somewhat more difficult than one would have expected.
  1. From our regional golfing events we have learnt that the shotgun start format is best suited to networking. It seems that not all courses allow for shotgun starts.
  2. This year we are combining our Durban Golf Day with our Midlands Golf Day so ideally we wanted a venue as convenient as possible for players coming from both directions.
  3. Then probably the biggest challenge of all was finding a venue that met with both of the above with an opening on a Friday.
Securing a venue that could accommodate all three was imperative to us and Kloof Country Club came up tops.

The event is scheduled to take place on Friday 21 September 2012, watch this space for more details.

Durban City Manager Guest Speaker at AGM

In December 2011 after Council had unanimously decided that he was the right candid to take over the reins from Dr Mike Sutcliffe, the appointment of Mr. Sibusiso Sithole as Durban City Manager was announced.

“We are keenly aware that the hopes and dreams of millions of people of our City, especially the poorest of the poor and indeed throughout the province and the country as a whole stand either to be realised or deferred through this appointment. Secondly we are not oblivious to the reality that the environment within and outside the Municipality, within which we shall be operating is characterised by volatility and high velocity of changes, which carry with them many paradoxes of opportunities for development and risks that must be managed at the same time,” said Sithole at the time.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that new City Manager Mr Sibusiso Sithole will be the guest speaker at our Annual General Meeting scheduled to take place on 12 June 2012.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to hear him speak in person.

Date: 12 June 2012

Dumb & Dumber

A lady named Rachel Hartman of Spokane Washington USA, submitted the following account of a bizarre incident she witnessed involving two very amateurish roof repair men.

She begins by informing us that the house across the street was in dire need of repair, a real fixer upper, so to speak. Shortly after a young couple had bought it, she observed two workmen climb up on its steep chalet-style roof, in order to repair its holes.

The first guy using a rope, tied himself to a tree branch near to the edge, the second guy’s ingenious safety plan was to tie himself to his buddy.

Her friend, an experienced roofer, went outside and told them that it wasn't a good idea and offered some advice on how best to secure themselves properly. They paid no heed to his warning.

Needless to say, on this damp, steep roof with many holes in it, the first guy eventually slipped and fell. He fell about fifteen feet before smacking into the tree trunk, breaking his collarbone and dislocating his shoulder. He then continued down, hitting the ground, spraining his ankle, and pulling his friend down with him. Fortunately for idiot number 2, he was on the other side of the roof and was able to stop his fall by grabbing onto a chimney.

In this particular case, it’s hard to decide who the dumber of them is. It’s a miracle that no serious harm came to the tree.
